Re: IPAM poller installation aborts on polling engines

You would use the IPAM v4.0 poller on an existing AP if you were running other modules on your poller than were not using the new Core version. Michal mentioned that currently only NPM 10.5 and IPAM 4.0 uses the new Core.

The only two scenarios I can think of that you would use the poller install is:

1) If you didn't have NPM at all

2) If you didn't want to upgrade NPM to 10.5 before upgrading or installing IPAM 4.0

Re: How to copy Component monitors that exist in one template to another custom template

Hi Tom,

Here is a way you can copy an existing component monitor to another template/

1) Go to your SAM Settings page and click "Manage Component Monitors within Templates".

2) Group by Template and select your original template with the component monitor you want to copy. Check the box next to the PowerShell monitor and click the Copy to button - "Copy to Application Monitor Template".  (Not sure why the image below is distorted, it's clear if you click on it)

3) Select the template(s) you want to copy the component monitor to and click Submit.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Couldn't agree more with the sentiments of the group.  And I also can't say we aren't guilty either.

While we back everything up, we aren't so good with testing the restores.  We have done restores, but never in a true DR test sense.  And those we've done have all been outside the Solarwinds realm.

As for restore from NCM, I truly think it would be faster to just use the backup config files on the NCM server and load them manually into the device.

Have you tried creating your own application template? You can start with the Component Monitor Wizard under [Settings - SAM Settings - Component Monitor Wizard] to monitor processes, services, performance counters, etc associated with the application. I also suggest adding a POP3, IMAP4. MAPI, or Exchange Web Services User Experience Monitor to ensure mail is going through the Voltage Email Security application and being delivered properly to your mail server (Exchange/Domino/etc).

Without trying it myself I can't say with any degree of certainty, but it sounds good in theory. In this case the component monitor would essentially only show as status of "down" where there was no response from the server. If that's the desired result then you should be good.

Several of these templates for Exchange 2010 have been updated recently to support cross domain/forest monitoring where no trusts exist. Perfect for MSP style monitoring where each customer is in their own unique domain.

Can I assume you created your own custom application template named "POA MySQL Server"? Is the alert showing up as triggered in the "Active Alerts" resource, or listed in the Triggered Alerts section of the Advanced Alert Manager? I'm trying to determine if this an issue with the alert condition not triggering or a problem with the Alert Action.

Managing the Management Tools

Networks have certainly grown in complexity in the last few years, as have the tools that manage them. Between the explosive growth of wireless networking and the sophistication of topologies and applications associated with the the LAN, gone are the days of simple up/down monitoring and copying device configs off to a TFTP server.

Management tools themselves can become bottomless pits for wasting man-hours if poorly designed or not matched well to a given environment. Frequently, the same people using the tools are those responsible for their upkeep, and time spent debugging a glitchy, complicated management or monitoring framework can detract from the primary mission of running and evolving a good network.

Its important to choose your tools wisely. Make sure you query similar environments for what they use (and how) before you purchase, and don’t believe for a minute that you are stuck with only mbasswhatever a network vendor provides for system management. And by all means, recognize that the care and feeding of management tools needs reasonable time and talent allotted in your scheduling forecasts and contributes to the total TCO of the tools that you buy.

How to stitch together "detatched resources" from different pages to form a view?

0

I need a scheduled report for Top 10 Netflow Conversations from each critical link. But I figured the way to do it would be to create a custom view and schedule a report to send the web page. Views can contain HTML code, but that doesn't allow me to include detatched resources from other pages (the page you arrive at, after clicking on the title of a section) such as this:

http://Solarwinds/Orion/DetachResource.aspx?ResourceID=328&NetObject=NI:3064

Anybody got ideas how to do it? Iframes? I thought they were out of fashion long time ago.

Could not have stated this better.  So many times I've seen management tools neglected to the point of uselessness.  But I will split the blame 50 / 50 between the users of said tools and the vendors who write them.  I've used quite a few tools that are not friendly to use and are a bear to keep up.  Of course I am also guilty of neglect too.  Taking the time to properly maintenance the tools and diligently keeping on top of changes goes a long way towards keeping those tools relevant.

Re: Are roll-your-own distributed storage systems a good idea?

I've never been a fan of roll-your-own solutions in the enterprise, simply because anything in use in the enterprise needs to have vendor support and SLAs behind it.  Buying a bunch of mid-range Dell desktops and packing them full of whatever drive you can get your hands on sounds like a recipe for failure.  What happens in 2 or 3 years when a drive or part dies and you can't find suitable replacement?  Do you self-stock replacements on site or pray to the FedEx gods that a replacement can be delivered in a timely manner?

That said, in a small business where cost is almost as important as reliability, there may be room for these roll-your-own solutions.  Maybe for a cost-focused business, saving thousands of dollars is worth having a random 2 day downtime sometime in the future, but for large enterprises, it's not.

Re: Problem with Windows shortcuts

The default value for "Treat Windows shortcuts as targets in listings" is "No", so you would need to modify this to "Yes" in order to test out my settings.

Serv-U reports the shortcut as a Unix style link because, for FTP, Serv-U uses "Unix style listings" for the LIST command and "Interpret Windows shortcuts as links" is "Yes".  Prior to the creation of the optional MLSD/MLST commands that standardized directory listings for FTP, FTP servers were free to report their directory listings in any format they chose.  Unix style listings was one of the more popular formats.  The following example shows how changing "Treat Windows shortcuts as targets in listings" affects the LIST command response issued by Serv-U:

LIST information for a shortcut file with "treat as target" -> No:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 user     group        1147 Jun 10 16:41:28 2013 shortcut-7z920-x64.msi

The 'l' at the beginning means link.  The size is for the .lnk file itself.  The file name on the end is for the shortcut itself.

LIST information for a shortcut file with "treat as target" -> Yes:

-rw-rw-rw-   1 user     group     1376768 Apr 11 12:56:20 2013 shortcut-7z920-x64.msi

I have listed the same file here after changing the setting in Serv-U and refreshing.  The 'l' is gone because Serv-U is treating the shortcut as if the target file existing in the directory being listed.  It also includes size information and modification date/time for the target file instead of the shortcut itself.  However, the file name is still for the shortcut itself.

This issue does not exist for SFTP because the format of the directory listing is already standardized.

"The default value for "Treat Windows shortcuts as targets in listings" is "No", so you would need to modify this to "Yes" in order to test out my settings."  Sorry, I got my "Yes" and "No" mixed up in my previous post. Regardless, it does not matter if it's set to "No" or "Yes" with regards to SyncBack. It fails to see the shortcut on the server but I appreciate your explanation because it helps me better understand just what that setting does.

This is from the Serv-U engineer but I do not know what settings were used:

...

COMMAND>     MLSD                 150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for MLSD.                Type=OS.unix=slink:/change_remixes_the_war_within.zip;Size=979;Create=20130603145656.499;Modify=20130603145656.500;Perm=rwfad;Win32.ea=0x00000020; change_remixes_the_war_within.zip - Shortcut.lnk                 226 Transfer complete. 1,777 bytes (626 compressed to 35.23%) transferred. 0.61 actual KB/sec,  1.74 effective KB/sec. STATUS>              Transferred 1,777 bytes (626 compressed to 35.23%). 9.70 actual KB/sec, 27.55 effective KB/sec.

...

I'm assuming Serv-U reports the shortcut as a Unix file type regardless of that setting. That would explain why SyncBack ignores the shortcut as if it was not being reported by the server.

I was also told by Serv-U support that I could disable MLSD/MLST in the “Server Limits & Settings | FTP Settings” menu, then edit the “LIST” command parameters, and set the listing style to “IIS” or “DOS” but I did not try that because I did not know if that would have any adverse effects. Presumably, that would change Type=OS.unix to something SyncBack would not disregard.

"This issue does not exist for SFTP because the format of the directory listing is already standardized." Can you elaborate on this a little?

Re: Problem with Windows shortcuts

The suggestion to disable the MLSD command is a good one, if only to see if it starts working as expected.  I had assumed that SyncBack was using the older LIST command, which apparently it's not.  After disabling MLSD, I don't recommend changing the list style to IIS or DOS.  By default, it'll use the UNIX style listings I mentioned before (be sure you've got that setting for "treat shortcut as target" set to "yes" ).  At that point, the directory listings you see in the client will look like the ones I posted and not the "Type=OS.unix" style you just posted about (that's the standardized response for MLSD).

The SFTP specification was better thought out in terms of how directory listings are handled and it even includes specific attributes and commands that make working with symbolic links (shortcuts to Serv-U) easier and more straight-forward.  Because of this, it doesn't surprise me that SyncBack and Serv-U agree on how to handle the symbolic link when using SFTP.

Extremely interested in getting added to this from a QoS reporting retention perspective.

We don't use the NetFlow side and only purchased NTA for QoS capacity reporting so improvements in retention would be fantastic!
