My apologies - it is indeed the node status. Just for the record - the SQL Trigger is not necessary then. To answer question 1, you could add a Custom HTML resource to your Volume Details view with the following text
Volume Status is <img src="/Orion/images/StatusIcons/${Status}.gif" >
and would appear like below in the dashboard
